"Unsent Letters" - unwritten letters: left lying in the clutter of a desk or in the "if, then there" drawer, they testify to past phases of life, rainy afternoons, doubts, experiments, and unfinished thoughts. Curled and roughened at the edges, long forgotten, there comes a time when we lift them up again like a treasure and rediscover them: there are stories to be told. This is more or less what happened to Pete Astor. He is a musician, author, and lecturer. He was the frontman of the bands The Loft and The Weather Prophets on the Creation Records label and wrote songs that significantly shaped the label's sound and the emerging indie genre. Since then, he has pursued a long-standing solo career, releasing music on various labels including Matador, Heavenly, Warp, EMI, and Fortuna Pop. He is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Westminster. In addition to extensive touring, he also produces records with David Sheppard as Ellis Island Sound and releases his spoken-word electro-pop project The Attendant with Ian Button (Go Kart Mozart, Death in Vegas) on his Faux Lux label. Since 2017, Astor has been signed to the prestigious Tapete Records label, which also houses artists such as Robert Forster, Lloyd Cole, and Comet Gain—among many other great acts. 2025 marks the year in which Pete Astor revived his first band, The Loft. The band split up in 1985 and had just completed their debut album, "Everything Changes Everything Stays the Same." As the title suggests, the band is rooted in the past but undeniably looking forward to the future. "Unsent Letters" comes from a similar context: It contains songs that Astor wrote during his time with The Loft, but which the band never played - along with songs from his forty-year career that are now finally seeing the light of day.
