The Squares from Nancy were one of the finest French garage bands of the early '90s, bashing out a raw garage and R&B sound deeply infected by the Medway scene. They released five singles and five LPs, recorded at London's legendary Toe Rag Studios with Liam Watson and had a particularly nice connection to the Medway family: drummer Ollie even played with The Headcoats in 1990. After splitting in 1995 and disappearing into various other projects, The Squares finally got back together in 2025 - and apparently they haven't forgotten how to make a bloody racket!

This double LP digs properly into their history. "Night Of The Squares" gathers together their original singles, while "Square Roots" is the real treasure chest: 15 previously unreleased covers recorded during spare studio time at Toe Rag between 1991 and 1995. Chuck Berry, Link Wray, The Seeds, Bo Diddley, The Milkshakes, The Kinks and more get dragged through The Squares' wonderfully primitive garage-R&B treatment.
