The Cat's Miaow started life in Melbourne back in 1992, recording tiny indiepop gems at home on four-track and scattering them across 7"s, cassettes and compilations. More than three decades later they've somehow arrived at their debut proper studio album - and thankfully nobody has tried to polish away what made them special in the first place.

"When you smiled and turned away" is wonderfully understated stuff: warm and fragile jangle-pop, sparse guitars, brushed drums and Kerrie Bolton's gorgeous, almost weightless vocals. There's plenty of melancholy, regret and yearning lurking underneath, but the songs themselves remain bright, melodic and beautifully concise, with little flashes of phased guitar and synth creeping into the mix. Fourteen songs in barely half an hour - no bloody messing about, just perfectly formed little pop songs that disappear before you've had enough of them.

A lovely return from one of Australia's cult indiepop bands, and a very natural fit for Slumberland. Limited yellow vinyl!
