Before Mercury Rev became the darlings of dreamy, orchestral psychedelic pop, they were one of the most gloriously unpredictable and downright noisy bands to emerge from the American underground. And their second album "Boces", originally released in 1993, is a magnificent reminder of just how beautifully out of control they could be!

Still featuring original vocalist David Baker alongside Jonathan Donahue, Grasshopper, Suzanne Thorpe, Dave Fridmann and Jimy Chambers, "Boces" is a wild, sprawling collision of psychedelic rock, experimental noise, twisted melodies and completely unexpected musical detours. The epic opener "Meth Of A Rockette's Kick" alone stretches beyond ten minutes, while tracks like "Something For Joey", "Bronx Cheer" and "Boys Peel Out" take the listener through a wonderfully strange universe of distorted guitars, swirling sounds and moments of surprising beauty. Think early Flaming Lips getting lost in a particularly deranged psychedelic wonderland!

Long unavailable on vinyl and CD, this extraordinary album finally returns in a freshly remastered 2026 edition courtesy of Beggars Banquet. The last Mercury Rev album with David Baker and one of the most adventurous records of their early years. Loud, weird, occasionally exhausting and absolutely bloody brilliant!
