Remember LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS? That wonderfully deranged bunch of Midwest punk weirdos who made DEVO sound almost respectable? Well, mastermind Martin Meyer is back with SOUP ACTIVISTS, and this time he's traded some of the mutant punk madness for a glorious helping of hook-filled, slightly wonky guitar pop! "Where The Rubbish Goes", released on Feel It Records, packs eleven songs into a brisk 25 minutes, and there's hardly a dull moment in sight.
Recorded in an old Masonic lodge in Dayton, Kentucky, with John Hoffman behind the desk, the album finds Meyer playing almost everything himself, apart from a few guest appearances. GOOD FLYING BIRD's Kellen Baker even drops by for a scorching guitar lead on a cover of HISS EXPLOSION's "Amnesia". Expect jangling guitars, scrappy melodies, stomping rhythms and that irresistible mixture of sweetness and snot that makes the best underground pop so much fun. "Typical Flowers" clocks in at a mere 95 seconds, "The Wayback" apparently finds the missing link between FLYING NUN Records and THE DEAD MILKMEN, and "Chateau Kids" sounds like a good excuse to jump around your bedroom like an idiot!
A cracking little collection of off-kilter guitar pop, with enough punk attitude to keep things interesting and enough hooks to make you come back for more. Fans of GUIDED BY VOICES, early FLYING NUN bands and the stranger corners of American indie punk should definitely give this one a spin. Weird, catchy and rather lovely!
