Iowa's Why Bother? return with "Beyond Step One", their eighth album and probably their strangest trip yet. At its core are the short, crooked punk songs the band do so well - garage punk, synth punk, new wave and oddball pop, packed with hooks but always sounding slightly wrong in exactly the right way.

This time, however, those songs are interrupted by eerie spoken-word pieces written and recited by the band's incarcerated fifth member Aaron Harris, recorded by phone from an Iowa state penitentiary. Why Bother? surround his words with noise, free-jazz textures and unsettling soundscapes, turning the record into something considerably weirder than a straightforward punk LP.

Eighteen pieces in the complete digital version, although the vinyl itself contains the first sixteen tracks - the final two are digital-only. Recorded at Plato's Cave and mastered by Mikey Young. Strange, catchy, funny, bleak and experimental, often within the space of a couple of minutes.
