One of the cheekier scams of the '80s garage revival is back! When "Anthology '64-'67" appeared on Greg Shaw's VOXX Records in 1983, The Numbers were presented as yet another obscure bunch of '60s garage-psych kids rescued from oblivion. There was just one small problem: the bloody band hadn't existed in the '60s at all.

The supposed teenage line-up of twin brothers Larry and Terry Tutor and Robert Dill was part of an elaborate Greg Shaw ruse, cooked up while record collectors were enthusiastically devouring Nuggets, Pebbles and every mysterious mid-'60s garage single they could get their hands on. So why bother finding another forgotten band when you could simply invent one? Better still, the joke worked because the music sounded the part - fuzzed-up garage, folk-punk and psych convincing enough to sit happily alongside the genuine 1966 article.
