San Diego's The Schizophonics return with "Burning Floor", their fourth album and their first for Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles. The trio have always sounded like a collision between a sweaty soul revue and a garage-punk riot, and this time they've tried to capture the sheer physical energy of their famously wild live shows.
Motown and '60s garage provide the groove, while fuzzed-out guitars, pounding R&B rhythms, '70s punk and flashes of early heavy metal supply the dirt. Think James Brown and Little Richard crashing headfirst into The Sonics, MC5 and The Stooges - frantic, funky and very definitely made for dancing.
The band went into the studio immediately after returning from a month-long European tour, with the songs already road-tested and firing on all cylinders. That explains why "Burning Floor" feels less like a carefully assembled studio record and more like somebody managed to squeeze a Schizophonics gig onto a disc.
