Ohio's Smug Brothers have always had a knack for cramming an absurd number of ideas into very little space, and "Pinhole to vortex" keeps that tradition nicely alive. Short, sharp songs, crunchy guitars, melodic hooks and that slightly scruffy home-recorded edge put this somewhere in the wonderful hinterland between lo-fi indie rock, garage and power-pop.

There's plenty of classic Ohio DNA running through it - wiry riffs, melodies that sneak up on you and songs that know when to bugger off before they've outstayed their welcome. Psychedelic flashes and quieter acoustic moments break up the guitar racket, while the whole thing retains the feeling of a band throwing ideas around faster than most could write them down. Rough without being deliberately crappy, catchy without getting polished to death - a fine little blast of restless guitar pop!
