Based around extensive interviews and first-hand memories, the book features voices including John Lydon, Siouxsie Sioux, Poly Styrene, Mark E. Smith and Lemmy, tracing punk from its roots and explosive first wave through post-punk and the movement's lasting influence. Music is only part of the story, with fashion, politics, DIY culture and the wider social changes surrounding punk all playing their part.

At around 528 pages, this is a substantial oral history rather than a quick overview - a many-voiced account of how punk happened, what came next and why its influence still refuses to disappear.
