Originally released in 1982 after The Clean's first break-up, "Getting Older" is one of the New Zealand legends' more ambitious early recordings - their own wonderfully ramshackle attempt at a "Wall Of Sound". Viola, trumpet, maracas and droning guitar pile up behind the song, with backing vocals from Chris Knox and The Chills' Martin Phillipps adding to the glorious racket.

The flipside gets considerably weirder. "Scrap Music" combines two separate performances of the same instrumental, while "Whatever I Do Is Right/Wrong" dispenses with guitar altogether - quite a trick for a band whose guitar sound helped define a whole bloody scene. And there's a tiny treat for the obsessives: this edition restores a few seconds of studio chatter and false starts before the final track, cheekily credited as "Arguing" on the sleeve.

Merge's 2026 edition is the first vinyl reissue of "Getting Older" since the original 1982 pressing - and the first time the single has ever been available on vinyl in North America.
