Originally released in 2013, "I See Seaweed" captures The Drones at one of the creative peaks of their career. Led by Gareth Liddiard, the Australian band stretch their raw garage and punk-blues roots into something darker, stranger and far more expansive.
Across eight lengthy tracks, quiet tension repeatedly erupts into huge walls of guitar, piano and feedback, while Liddiard delivers some of his sharpest and most intense lyrics. "A Moat You Can Stand In" provides the immediate punch, while "Laika", "Nine Eyes" and the epic closing "Why Write A Letter That You'll Never Send" show the band's more sprawling, dramatic side.
Not exactly easy listening, but that's precisely the point - "I See Seaweed" is a bruising, intelligent and remarkably powerful Australian rock record that gets better the deeper you dig into it.
