The Afghan Whigs' "In Spades" finds Greg Dulli and company doing what they have always done best - pulling seemingly incompatible influences together and turning them into something unmistakably their own.

The band's roots in raw Midwestern punk remain audible, but they're wrapped in psychedelic soul, dark melodies and the weight of classic '70s rock. Huesker Due and Die Kreuzen collide with the dramatic sweep of The Temptations, while huge guitars and Dulli's intense vocals give the whole record a brooding, cinematic feel.

Originally released in 2017, "In Spades" proved that the reunited Afghan Whigs weren't interested in simply recreating their '90s records. Dark, soulful and powerful, it's a proper continuation of the band's story rather than a nostalgic return.
