Now here's a collaboration that makes perfect bloody sense! Ronnie Yoshiko Fujiyama of The 5.6.7.8's teams up with Sydney garage veterans Cheetah Beat, a band featuring former members of The Hekawis, The Booby Traps, The Thurston Howlers and The Crusaders. The two camps first crossed paths when Cheetah Beat shared a Sydney stage with The 5.6.7.8's in 2025 - and luckily they decided not to leave it at that.
For the first of two simultaneously released singles they dig deep into vintage Japanese pop and soul. "Boy & Girl", originally recorded by Akiko Wada in 1969, gets turned into a stomping mod-garage/Northern Soul mover, while Chinatsu Nakayama's 1970 "Sabaku" receives another suitably fuzzy garage-soul makeover. Yoshiko up front, Cheetah Beat supplying the fuzz, sax, groove and primitive rock'n'roll kick behind her - what's not to like?
Released by Japan's legendary Time Bomb Records and limited to just 500 copies with picture sleeve. Two obscure Showa-era Japanese soul tunes dragged onto the garage dancefloor - great stuff!
