By 1991, the Butthole Surfers had already spent years terrorising the underground with their gloriously deranged mixture of psychedelic noise, punk rock, twisted humour and complete musical insanity. And with their fifth studio album "Piouhgd", the Texas freaks proved that getting a little closer to the alternative rock mainstream didn't mean they were about to start behaving themselves. Not a bloody chance!
Originally released in 1991, "Piouhgd" finds Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary and company serving up another wonderfully warped collection of fuzzed-out guitars, bizarre sound experiments, surreal vocals and unpredictable psychedelic mayhem. From the sprawling "Revolution" to the various appearances of "Lonesome Bulldog", this is the Butthole Surfers doing what they do best: turning rock'n'roll inside out and making the whole damn thing sound magnificently wrong. And then there's their completely twisted take on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man", transforming a psychedelic '60s classic into something altogether more sinister and unsettling.
Now reissued by Matador Records with remastered audio, "Piouhgd" is another essential chapter in the band's utterly unique history. A glorious collision of psychedelic rock, noise, punk and pure Texas weirdness. Definitely not for polite company!
