Originally released in 1982 and generally known simply as "Great Sounds Great", The Clean's second EP finally makes it back onto vinyl - the first vinyl reissue since the original pressing! Recorded by Doug Hood and Chris Knox in an old Christchurch house in March 1982, it followed the hugely successful "Boodle Boodle Boodle", but instead of simply doing the same thing again, the New Zealand trio deliberately went for their stranger and more idiosyncratic material.

There's still that unmistakable Clean guitar magic - check the brilliant opening instrumental "Fish" - but organ plays a much bigger part this time around, particularly on the classic "Beatnik". Elsewhere things become wonderfully sparse and odd, with tracks such as "Side On" and "End of My Dream" making wonderfully economical use of Chris Knox's four-track recorder. It's rough, minimal, melodic and peculiar in exactly the way that made the early Flying Nun scene so bloody special.

Initially greeted with mixed reviews, the EP nevertheless reached #4 in the New Zealand charts and stayed there for three months. Merge's 2026 reissue puts this essential piece of early New Zealand indie-pop back on vinyl for the first time in more than four decades!
