Chicago's Consensus Madness make their debut with "Endeavors", a short, scrappy and seriously infectious love letter to punk in all its early forms. Proto-punk, first-wave punk and hardcore collide with Dangerhouse-style weirdness, UK '77, Neue Deutsche Welle and the raw enthusiasm of '90s Japanese garage punk.

The result is wonderfully uncomplicated in the best possible way: rough guitars, pounding rhythms, distinctly Midwestern vocals and enough nervous energy to make standing still fairly difficult. There's humour and frustration running through the songs too, turning the boredom of everyday life and the general absurdity of the modern world into something you can pogo to.

Rather than faithfully recreating one particular punk era, Consensus Madness throw their favourite bits into one noisy pile and make it sound spontaneous and alive. A cracking debut for anyone whose definition of punk happily stretches from obscure Dangerhouse singles to Japanese garage insanity.
