One listen and we were hooked. Ottawa's Retrospects are the new band around Ian Manhire, best known as the frontman of The White Wires and The Sedatives - and anyone who remembers those bands already knows what a talent he has for writing ridiculously catchy punk and power pop songs.
This time the guitars share space with a mountain of analogue synthesizers. Retrospects play sharp, infectious synth-punk and new wave with three synth players on stage and enough hooks to make you wonder where Manhire has been hiding these songs. No computer programs here - just analogue synths, hardware gear, pounding bass and twelve originals, including the killer instrumental "Bank Street Punks".
Recorded in a historic 1850s stone church in rural Canada at Studio Cimitière, the album combines early-'80s synth-pop atmosphere with the immediate songwriting you'd expect from the man behind The White Wires. Originally released in a tiny edition of 100 copies on the band's own Vintage Voltage label in 2025, Alien Snatch! now gives this addictive debut a well-deserved wider release.
Recoloured vinyl edition of 461 copies with new artwork by Sam Torzina and A-Hule-Hule.
