Chicago's Spread Joy return with their third album, "III", and once again prove that post-punk doesn't have to mean standing around looking miserable. Their songs are short, sharp and rhythmically wired, built around twitchy guitars, restless bass and drums, and melodies designed to get bodies moving.

There's plenty of the nervous art-school energy of Suburban Lawns, Talking Heads and The B-52's in here, but Spread Joy have developed their own wonderfully economical version of it. Ten songs, barely any wasted motion, and even the advance track "Pygmalion" manages to do its damage in under a minute.

"III" isn't simply a frantic punk record, though. Beneath all those jerky rhythms are genuinely catchy pop songs, balancing brains, hooks and dancefloor energy without polishing away the weirdness.

Smart, wiry and ridiculously infectious post-punk - music for people who'd rather dance than discuss post-punk.
