Now this is a bloody nice surprise! Violets were formed in Tokyo in 2002 by Patch after the break-up of Gyogun Rends, originally with the idea of creating a more pop-oriented Japanese-language band. More than twenty years later they're still at it, and "Fire Wheel" sounds like somebody has opened a door straight back into the filthy garage punk clubs of the late '90s.

Raw garage and proto-punk collide with genuinely great power-pop songwriting: sharp, cutting guitars, a rock-solid rhythm section and Patch's instantly recognisable slightly raspy voice sitting right on top. Think New York Dolls and Dictators stripped of some of the glam and dragged through considerably more dirt - tough rock'n'roll, but with proper melodies underneath all the racket.

Originally released digitally in Japan in March 2025, "Fire Wheel" now gets its vinyl debut courtesy of Sounds Of Subterrania. Eight songs of wonderfully rough-edged Japanese garage punk'n'roll that could have appeared twenty-five years ago and would have sounded just as damn good!
