Mexican reggae with a serious dose of funky madness! Here's another wonderfully obscure discovery from ELY COMBO, one of the first Mexican outfits to pick up the infectious ska and reggae rhythms coming across the border from Belize in the early '70s. And on "El Increible Reggay", they take that Caribbean inspiration into some seriously unexpected territory!
Just imagine Isaac Hayes' legendary "Shaft" and Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band's dancefloor monster "Express Yourself" given a full-on reggae makeover! Add Jamaican favourites from the repertoire of Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, and you've got a wonderfully unusual mixture of vintage funk, soul and Caribbean grooves, all filtered through the Mexican music scene of the 1970s. Who the hell would have expected that?
Rescued from obscurity by Vampisoul, "El Increible Reggay" is another fascinating example of how Jamaican music travelled far beyond the island and inspired musicians in the most unexpected places. A cracking curiosity for lovers of vintage reggae, funky oddities and rare Latin American sounds!
