Before hip-hop, before rap took over the world, there were Jamaica's mighty sound systems and the DJs who knew how to work a crowd! "Listen Up! DJ Style" takes us back to the roots of Jamaican deejay culture, when guys like COUNT MACHUKI and SIR LORD COMIC started talking, shouting and rhyming over the hottest tunes in the dancehall. What began in the ska days developed into a whole new reggae style, and this cracking compilation on Kingston Sounds brings together some of its finest practitioners.

We're talking U-ROY, I-ROY, BIG JOE, DR. ALIMANTADO, DILLINGER, TAPPER ZUKIE, DENNIS ALCAPONE, PRINCE FAR I, JAH STITCH and more! Fourteen tracks packed with heavyweight Jamaican rhythms, cheeky verbal sparring, streetwise observations and that unmistakable sound system atmosphere. From the playful to the militant, these are the voices that helped turn the DJ into a star in his own right.

A mighty fine introduction to the golden age of Jamaican DJ reggae, and a tasty addition to any collection of vintage ska, rocksteady and roots sounds. Comes on VIOLET VINYL!
