More than three decades after their original run, Boston's Ape Hangers are making up for lost time with "II" - 16 tracks of garage rock'n'roll, melodic punk and power-pop packed with ringing guitars, big hooks and the sort of scruffy energy that made them such a fine fit for the '90s alternative underground in the first place.

Ape Hangers have a particularly nice bit of cult-rock history behind them: they appeared on the soundtrack to the 1995 movie "Empire Records", with their music also turning up early in the film. After an A&M album and a move to Boston the band eventually disappeared, only to reunite in 2025. Judging by the new material, the intervening decades haven't done much damage - there's plenty of garage stomp, Rickenbacker-style jangle and sweet power-pop harmony here, with songs such as "She Comes Again" and "I Don't Mind" showing they can still knock out a bloody good hook.

Released by the always dependable Rum Bar Records, "II" includes 16 tracks plus bonus material and a deluxe artwork package.
